Singapore 's men's water polo team was the surprise winner of the first gold medal of the 25th SEA Games in Vientiane yesterday.

The Singaporean side dominated, remaining unbeaten in the round robin tournament by beating Indonesia 14-5, thrashing the Philippines 8-1 and finishing the job with an 8-5 win over Thailand .

There were only four teams in the event this year; the Philippines took silver and Indonesia won bronze.

The SEA Games 2009 medals are being produced by a Vietnamese company – MarCom. This firm is also the exclusive provider of souvenirs for the games in Laos. MarCom Chairman and General Director Nguyen Hien Luong said that the company surpassed experienced rivals from China and Thailand to win the medal-casting contract thanks to their careful research of Lao culture and history.

Luong said that his company spent eight months learning about Lao people and their lives so that its medal designs clearly reflect Laotian culture. The front side of the 25th SEA Games medals depicts the Thatl Luong pagoda, a famous tourist site in Laos.

Below the pagoda in English are the words “SEA Games 25th Laos”. The medals are decorated by Champa flowers and leaves, symbols of Laos.


The medal’s back side is a big, blossomed champa flower with five petals.

In the center of the flower are Champa and Champi elephants, sacred animals for the 25th SEA Games

(KPL) Deputy President of Lao Disable People Sports Association, Dr Paseuth Phothisane last Thursday has welcomed the Lao para athletes who had won medals at 5th Asean Para Games in Malaysia, held between between 15-19 August.

The Lao athletes won a silver medal and a bronze medal from the Powerlifting competition.

Dr Kesone Sisongkham, leader of Lao National team said that the Lao Paralympic Committee sent 14 disabled athletes to compete in three events, such as male volleyball, wheelchair basketball and power lifting,
The Lao team managed to win two medals from power lifting, for the 48 kg and 67kg categories.

The silver medalist, Mr Eay Simay competed in the 48kg category and he lifted 155kg and the bronze medalist, Mr Mone Xayyavong, competed in the 67kg division and he lifted 135kg.

The country's most experienced badminton player at the national and international level, Yothin Latsavong, is hopeful of winning a medal in the 25th SEA Games this December.

The medal for the 25th SEA Games in Laos is designed with inspiration coming from "Pra Thatluang", Laos's national symbol and spirit, combined with Lao National flower (Champa) and Lao national animal (elephants). The medals embody with Lao traditional art with message of the 25th SEA Games.



The medals are 70mm in diameter. On the front side, the medal adopts the logo of the 25th SEA Games and Lao art at the outer. The top marks with the message "50th Anniversary" and at the bottom with the message "25th SEA Games, Laos". While on the back, the medal is shaped with 5 pedals of Lao national flower, and Mr. Champa, and Ms. Champi, the 2 lucky mascots for this game.

Noble and elegant, the 25th SEA Games medal is a blending of traditional Lao culture and the SEA Games spirit. It gives the winners of the Games great honor and acclamation as recognition of their achievement. This logo is designed by D.Southavong from Phetchampa Advertising Ltd.

(KPL) The National Weightlifting Federation of the Lao PDR hoped to bag a gold medal at the upcoming 25th Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games), in Vientiane from 9-18 December.

This was said by the President of National Weightlifting Federation Mr Thansamay Kommasith said, ?We have already selected the best 28 weightlifters, six women to be the national team and they are now having training in the Training Centre at Phonsavanh School in the National University of Laos?.He said that the federation has sent eight weightlifters to join the Weightlifting Championship in Xiengmai, Thailand for testing the strong of our athletes then we capacity said that our weightlifters has improved their skills and good techniques more than the federation expected.

For the Lao National Weightlifting Federation just has established to be the new federation, which getting the main supported by the State Enterprise of Lao Telecommunication and also received some sport equipments from neighbouring countries?, Mr Thansamay added.

In order to the new establishment of the federation, the federation has a higher decided to create the best national weightlifters for joining the SEA Games as well as the federation also making the plans for sending their weightlifters to join the competitions in oversea for their warm-up match before will compete in the SEA Games.
