The Vientiane Public Works and Transport department says construction and improvement of roads around Dongdok village in Xaythany district are about 80 percent complete in the lead-up to the SEA Games in December.

An initial layer of asphalt paving is currently being laid on the main road in the village and a second layer will be laid and water channels installed after the wet season concludes.

The road to the SEA Games village in Dongdok village is 8 km long with a width of 7 metres.

The installation of lighting along the road was completed in July.

Deputy Head of the department, Mr Nuanta Hompathoum said all road improvements for the SEA Games would be complete by October.

The department is constructing a 2 km road from Dongdok village to Donnoun village in Xaythany district, a 9.6 km road from Dongbang village to Latkhuay village in Xaythany district, and a 6 km road from Nongnieng village to Huakhua village in Xaysettha district.

Half of the 9.6 km road has been paved and the remainder will be completed once the wet season is over.

Another 6 km stretch from Tanmixay village in Xaythany district to Dondaeng village in Chanthabouly district is also under construction.

Most of the road construction and improvements began last April and officials are confident they will all be finished in time for the SEA Games to facilitate transport during the event.

The department is spending about 30 billion kip on improving roads around Vientiane in the lead-up to the games.

Mr Nuanta said the new and improved roads around Dongdok village will facilitate the transport of athletes during the games, with their accommodation located in the area.

The department is also making improvements to roads in the area around Chao-Anouvong football stadium in Anou village, Chanthabouly district.
